Enhance your Battlefield! PEDION Wall System unlocked

Our backers did it again - yes, another Stretch Goal is down, one that really enhances our range: the Pedion Wall System.
The newly unlocked Pedion Bridge - modular, affordable, perfect for your River Tiles!

Raise those Walls Soldier!

The Wall System started as a small side-project, designed to take advantage of the connectivity of the Tiles and add man-made features on them, which can be removed easily and stored away – Pedion style. The Stretch Goal unlocks the basics of the Wall-system, allowing players to get a series of stone fences and hedges to enhance their terrain and their games. The main requirements behind the Wall System are:
a) to avoid the placing of walls on bases for stability,
b) to allow flexibility in wall placement and unit movement,
c) to take advantage of magnetized areas on the tiles, and
d) to be simple and affordable.

Creating wargame walls without bases improves the aesthetics of the battlefield (the walls touch the ground realistically ) and allows unit placement next to them without having to balance the unit on the raised base. But what substitutes bases or unnatural wall thickness? The Pedion Columns of course.

The main principle of the System is this: there are “stone” columns (1x1x3cm) which act as the anchors of the walls/fences. These posts have magnetic bases to clip on the tiles, and magnets on 2 or 3 of their sides for the wall parts to clip onto them. So, you first place the columns, and then easily snap any wall part you want on and off. The Columns act as stabilizers and connectors for a network of fences.

You can better understand see the simple way the System works (and the easy that walls are dismantled and stores away in the following video, especially after 0:34)

The prototypes you see on the photos and video are made from foamboard and plasticard. The Stretch Goal represents the design of molds to create resin parts of walls and columns, to be painted afterwards. For the hedges I have used pan scourer – and I am not sure if I’ll switch to something else, if it is going to keep the cost low for backers.

Speaking of cost, there are new options in the Add-ons section, for backers to enhance their sets. Expect for these to grow, as I will add more wall lengths and options. And perhaps grab that “Crops Tile” Hedge Set, as the price is a Kickstarter special!

The wall parts will be 12cm (4.7”) long, 3mm thick and their height will vary depending on scale and purpose. Specifically, I was planning to make available different heights for players to choose: “15mm low” (H=10mm), “15mm high/20-28mm low” (H=20mm), “20-28mm high” (H=30mm). For Stone fences, there will be grey stone, sand stone and brick variations.

Build those Bridges

Along with the "Wall System", another favorite of mine unlocked: the Pedion Bridge. In the spirit of Pedion, the Bridge is a 3-part flat stone modular construct, designed for the depth and with of the River Tiles. The arches go 1 cm deep to touch water surface and the bridge is 7 cm wide and 14 cm long.
It assembles (magnetically) into one piece or you can dismantle it and store it away without taking any space. If you are getting any River tiles, this is a must have add-on, especially at the £9 price tag.

Desert and Winter Variation photos

Many backers asked for them, so take a look at the first photos from Desert/Winter prototype tiles. The beautiful 15mm and 6mm miniatures of Anne and +David Yeomans  bring the photographs to life.

The elephant is coming!

Special kind of "broken ground" tile type I am thinking for Desert and Snow: raised dunes/drifts. It increases tile weight and vertical size, but looks nice.

Next Stretch Goal

We still have a little bit over 2 weeks left in the Kickstarter campaign - how about some more Stretch Goals? The next one, upon £28000, will unlock some "Science Fiction" looks for the Tiles. But this is not only it; this SG unlocks the two types of Crater Tiles (asteroid and bombardment crater) as well as different, more exotic "liquids" for your River tiles: Lava flow and Green toxic stream...
Hooked? Spread the word, bring your friends and we will reach it!

Good gaming,

George

PEDION Battlefields just got better: another Stretch Goal achieved!

Bring out your farmers! Another Stretch Goal reached: Crops Tile is available! And this comes in addition to the 1st Stretch Goal, unlocking the Desert and Winter themes for the Battlefield Sets!

The fabulous farmers of +David Yeomans and Anne Yeomans attacked on a Crops/Orchard Tile
Oh man, this Kickstarter brings forth feelings and emotions which are definitely not the norm for a 40-year old. So, let me give you some insight on what has happened during the last week (going backwards to the previous blog post):

2nd Stretch Goal was reached, unlocking the Crops Pedion Tile

Yesterday our pledge total reached and surpassed £20000, making feasible the design and production of a Crops Pedion Tile. Crops, orchards and other types of fields are quite common in rural areas, especially in temperate climates. They tend to cover most of the gently sloped areas which are suitable for farming; the exact same areas that commanders historically have repeatedly chosen to give their battles. So, I thought it would make a valid addition to Pedion, to be able to expand and enhance your battlefields with the representation of farmed lands.

The basic Crops Tile: a Sown area and a Crops field

The tile is designed having the base scale range of Pedion (15-28mm) in mind. It consists of two distinctive areas that the players may declare as they please: a sown area, planted with low vegetation, and a dirt field.

The "dirt" field; actually a magnetized area for add-on terrain depending on your whims

Characteristics:

  • The tile displays two actual fields, in sizes compatible with 15-28mm scales.
  • The dirt area is actually magnetized, so it can be used to clip magnetic features onto it.
  • The tile comes with Crops "rows" and some Orchard fruit trees. Players can use the dirt field as flat ground, or connect the provided features any way they want. They can create a full crops field, an orchard, or a combination.
  • When miniatures move through the terrain, the magnetized features can be removed temporarily, to allow placement of units without any fuss (no more soldiers staying on top of your crops!).
  • As Pedion is further developed, more features will become available to clip onto the field: other types of orchards, vines, even whole farmhouses.
  • The tile includes magnetic hard-points all around its edges and across its centerline; their purpose is to attach columns of the Pedion Wall System, the next Stretch Goal of the Kickstarter Campaign.
Check out some of these features in the photos:

Field can be used as orchard (final product will include 4 fruit trees)

Cannot get enough of Pedion? Introducing the PedionAMMO subscription

For some time now, I was trying to find a way for Pedion owners to easily expand their Sets. You see, Pedion is not only modular, but its main design advantage is its ability to constantly expand. So, a week ago I have had that light-bulb moment about a subscription based service; the response in the project's comments section was overwhelmingly positive. So now we have our own "Loot Crate", and it's called PedionAMMO (yes, like ammunition).

No, I won't send you an actual ammo crate, this is a mock-up

The PedionAMMO Subscription Service is a way for you to receive monthly Pedion goodness and expand your boards, or even start new Sets. This monthly service will include lightweight, compact additions. Subscribers can expect to receive (non-exhaustive list):

  • Tiles (plain, broken ground, forest floors, roads, and if possible even rivers). The tiles may be of types unlocked during this campaign, or new themes that I design for Pedion in a later date. I was thinking of running an annual poll for each year's theme (eg Green, desert, scifi etc).
  • Sets of trees (magnetic)
  • Rock formations (magnetic)
  • Wall system parts
  • Grids
  • Hill parts
  • Pedion Blank Tiles
  • Other promotional stuff, like Pedion PrintTiles (gaming mat tiles), FoamGrass etc

You can subscribe either for 1 month, or save some money by going for the 6-month and 12-month subscription packages, which offer a discount of -10% and -20% respectively for Kickstarter backers! There are two ongoing rates, only due to differences on shipping costs:

  1. The base monthly cost for residents of Europe is £10, and
  2. The base monthly cost for residents of USA, Canada, Australia and the rest of the World is £11.5 (~$17.5 US)

The above costs include shipping; and it goes without saying, the retail values of the included items will cover/exceed this rate. The Subscription service will commence after the Project's fulfillment, namely December 2015.

Before the 2nd, there was the 1st: Desert and Winter ground variations were Unlocked!

Five days ago our Pledge Total surpassed the £18000 limit, thus unlocking for all current and future backers out first Campaign Stretch Goal: the availability of Desert and Winter (Snow) ground types for your modular battlefields. What will this mean? As a free Upgrade, all physical rewards with terrain tiles can now be of three variants: the original "Green Spring" theme, the Desert theme and the Winter theme.

When "locking" their rewards after the campaign, backers can choose the Ground Type of any or all Tiles in their Sets/add-ons to become Snow/Winter or Desert.
Though the new Ground variations do not introduce completely new tile types, they do bring some exciting variations in existing tiles. Specifically:

  • Forest tiles in Desert boards will include palm trees instead of temperate forest trees. But you can upgrade your palm-tree "forest" to become an Oasis with a small pond in the middle. Or you can completely forgo the vegetation option, and turn your "forest" tile into a "Badlands" tile, with magnetic rock formations (mesas) to clip on the tile.
  • The same option of snow-covered badlands can be used by backers of Winter terrain as well; you can upgrade your "forest" and substitute your trees for magnetic snow-covered rocks. The rock formations will be available as a stand-alone add-on as well.
  • The river tiles in Desert board will also have the painted option of "Dried creek". In Snow variations you can upgrade painted or liquid glass rivers to have small pieces of drifting ice in the "liquid glass" water (just for aesthetics or to actually help fording).

I am in the process of creating sample prototypes of tiles in the two new themes. While not all are finished yet, here is a glimpse of some tile types in the Desert theme. Please keep in mind that these are a Work in Progress, and although 95% ready, they still lack some details (like flocking and some extra sand effects).
Desert Broken Land tile - includes a magnetic hard-point

Same tile, with a desert rock formation clipped on; The rock is an example of the rocks you can get for creating "badlands" instead of "forests" in your Desert board

Straight Road tile, in Desert theme, with Asphalt surface. Road markings add realism but limit the tile usage only to 15-20mm scales as they delineate traffic lanes

Next Stretch Goals

But all these was only the beginning, believe it or not! Now two more Stretch Goals -one Social and one depending on Pledge Level- are within breathing distance. Actually, the "social" one may well be realized the moment your reading these lines, we are that close: when we reach the number of 130 backers, each one of our physical reward levels will get an extra, free Tree. Plus, in case your Set or/and add-ons include Forests, each Forest tiles get one free tree as well. Only 2 more backers are needed!

The next pledge level Stretch Goal is also close, at £23000, and it will unlock a NEW kind of  terrain add-on: the Pedion Wall System. You have seen examples in photos and videos, and the Stretch Goal will allow the creation of mold for realizing these designs. And we are less than £2500 away!

Thank you for reading this far, and I hope you will get on the Pedion train, or even bring some hobbyists with you!

Good gaming,
George

PEDION Battlefields has Funded in 55 hours! Now for Stretch Goals

Wow! It took me a bit to regain my speech, and now it's time to say THANK YOU! Peopled flocked to Pedion Kickstarter, and it got funded in just 55 hours!

Of course, the fun it's just starting! If you have followed this blog, you know that I love to design new things and expand on ideas; so, it's time for Stretch Goals. But for this to happen, we need more people to support us:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/georgepanopoulos/pedion-modular-prepainted-terrain-system-for-rpgs
The beautiful Indians of Dave and Anne Yeomans next to a Pedion River in UKGE2015

The first Stretch Goal is to produce different themes of the Pre-painted Tiles, and specifically a Winter theme and a Sand/Desert theme. We are less than £2800 away, so help us make it happen!

This Stretch goal will allow supporters to choose to have their Reward Set of Pedion tiles painted in a different theme than the original "Spring Green" presented in most pictures.
The Tile types remain the same; but if the supporters choose so, they can have them covered in "heavy" snow, or in golden sand. This Upgrade will actually be without any extra cost (apart from upgrading any forest tiles to "Oasis" tiles, since they will also include a pond at a small extra cost).

It is time to introduce our first "SOCIAL" Stretch Goals as well, which we are keeping as a surprise. So here it goes:
When the number of Backers reaches 130 (it's at 97 right now), each and every backer of a physical reward pledge will get a FREE extra magnetic tree.
Also, you will get another FREE magnetic tree for every Forest Tile that your reward includes or you buy as an add-on; that makes the available trees for your Forest Tiles Seven (7), instead of six.
This is a Kickstarter-only free upgrade!

Hope you like your free gifts, because more will come in later backer numbers!

How do you get your gifts? Share the Pedion campaign with more people!
You can share the campaign directly with the "Share" button at the top on your social networks. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter, in order to "like", favor", and share our posts.
But two other venues will help as well:
a) be sure to visit daily or at least on alternating days the KickTraq page of the Project, and then click back to the project page. This increases popularity within Kicktraq and moves the project up in the Kicktraq front page Hot List, where thousands of people may see it; and you will monitor the project's process on the same time :)
b) visit and post/like at a preview article about Pedion on the very popular Beasts of War wargaming site - they found the product worthy, so we could keep the article trending!

Pedion made an impression in UKGameExpo 2015

As you may know, I traveled to Birmingham those last days to live the great gaming experience which is UKGameExpo show... I had a brilliant time, and I also maned a stand with Pedion tiles.

The look on visitors' faces can be summarized in this word: amazed. They approached the stand in a slightly apprehensive way: "look at this beautiful terrain, it must be heavy and cumbersome", "we will need a new house to put this" etc (yes, people actually said this).
They left awestruck: they discovered first hand how lightweight, durable, practical and 100% modular the whole system is, in addition to beautiful... We had comments like "excellent", "brilliant" coming from people like former GW sculptors, Mantic demonstrators and Hawk employees. Two of our Backers, Tom and Dave found their way to the stand, to see in person what they had backed. Their reviews are now in the Comments section of the Campaign, for the world to see that Pedion is what it promises.

So check out some moments from our UKGE stand! Do not forget to share!

Again, a huge thank you for getting Pedion so far; now let's make it even better!

Good gaming,
George
