Making even better River and Swamp tiles!

It has been a long time between blog posts, but it is for a good cause: fulfilling orders! In this update I wanted to share our beautiful Swamp add-on, as well as our improved method on River tiles.

New 6'x4' Sets avaialble for preorder in the eshop

While you are visiting the eshop, check out the new, more affordable 6'x4' Sets we introduced!

Production Improvements

It took some time, and some delay on river tile sets, but I think we nailed it in greatly improving the production method of river tiles. We designed precision molds where we cast only the river side parts of the river in resin. Then the rest of the tile is composed by regular tile parts, ie polystyrene, and it is based on PVC bases. The challenge was on creating 0.5mm  precise resin parts and also deciding on a valid compound material to attach resin and polystyrene while preserving elasticity. After much trial and error, our first v2.0 river tiles are on their way :) The new method requires less resin, allowing for 3x faster casting time, and as a side effect it produces more lightweight and less fragile tiles. So, we will now be producing sets even faster!

the new, multi-part method for river tiles
It allows for a huge number of river tiles produces in 3 or 4 castings
The final product is identical to our resin tiles

This was not our only improvement; I was not 100% happy with the behavior of PVC glue and the grass mat covering of tiles in the face of extreme humidity. People were noticing a wrapping effect on tile edges (although it was easily mended by putting on some weight). After trying and rejecting a myriad of solutions, we finally nailed it by selecting a gluing agent devoid of water: low expansion polyurethane. This is a demanding procedure, which does not "forgive" misplacement like regular glues do, but now you will be getting even better Green Spring tiles.

E-shop open for business - take advantage of the low British Pound rates!

Although we are very close on creating a stock of basic 3x3 and 4x4 core sets to sell on retail, we will also take preorders as usual with a 2-month waiting time to deliver.

This is a great chance for everyone of you interested in expanding your collection in our regular prices. And, for non-UK residents, it is a great time to take advantage of the extremely low GBP conversion rates and save 20% or more.

It has been an ...interesting June.

Good gaming all!

Journal #13 - oh, those beautiful new tiles!

Much is happening in Pedion-verse, which I would really like to share! But what I really want to do with this blog post is to show off -without a shred of shame- the newly created beautiful pictures of Tile Types unlocked as Stretch Goals during the Kickstarter. But some business first...

No, this is not a real Greek beach, is Pedion Coastline tile... more below ;)

Pledge Manager (and extra pre-orders) are Live; lock your stuff!

You will pleased to know that the pledge management system is up and running, and all backers have received an invite to lock their pledges. Almost half of them have actually gone and finalized their rewards already, so we are moving on! The Pledge Manager is set-up as part of the Pedion e-shop. This has another advantage: not only can backers add more last minute stuff to their pledges, but people who missed the Kickstarter have their (last) chance to pre-order Pedion Battlefield Sets! The Pledge manager will be open up to the end of the month, so not much time left to take advantage of Kickstarter prices and shipping.

New, Unlocked versions of Tile Types

As many may know, we unlocked an awful large number of new themes, tile types and combinations during the Kickstarter Campaign. Because of the hectic rhythm of those days, we managed to create prototypes for only a few of them -those of the first Stretch Goals reached- like Green Grass Ponds, Craters etc. However, there were a LOT more stuff made available, mostly as extra options to the existing tile types, which we did not manage to show during the campaign but only to describe it.

While we were mass-preparing tiles for the backers' orders, we also made sure that these unlocked options were implemented. We wanted to have a picture of at least some of the new options available for the Pledge Manager, so the backers could have a better idea and base their choice in what they saw and not what they read.

Another cool fact about the tiles/add-ons you will see below is that they are not mock-ups or prototypes - they are backer stuff. So, here are some images to see for yourselves, and we are very proud of how they are turning out!

Frozen option for the "Pond" tile: a special liquid glass option for the Winter themed boards with a pond included. The pond is complete cast in epoxy resin.

The Frozen Pond tile (winter theme, liquid glass)

River with floating ice pieces: Staying in the Winter theme, another option of displaying the river surface was to add floating ice pieces. The idea is not to have a completely frozen river, but to show how cold it is, and perhaps assign some wargame attribute to the ice pieces (perhaps making the river passable?). Notice the darker blue/black of the winter water.

The ice floating pieces are cast in white/blue transparent resin

Two river tiles joined. The upper tile represents a "Ford" tile, with a winter dirt road reaching the riversides. The "square" shapes showing on the river banks are magnetic hardoints for trees, walls, bridges, buildings etc

Now, to our pride and joy, the Coastline tile types. Coastline/Riversides were requested by the backers and unlocked close to the end. The Straight, Concave and Convex tiles will be of two types (2 different molds). The delta and the open water of one type (molds in progress). The tiles you see below are cast in resin or resin and liquid glass for the respective version. Also, the "water" tile sides also connect magnetically (we did not want to have to apply constant pressure on the tile corner by clipping velcro). Also, ALL the sloped beach part is Magnetic, so players can snap walls, bunkers, artillery or anything else on them.

Urban Road Tiles: about midway during the campaign, a stretch goal unlocked which is a personal favorite. Now you can get a series of tiles to create a board of an urban environment, ready for man-made structures like buildings, ruins, factories, sandbags etc. Skirmish games become more and more popular and with urban tile options you could get the basis for a neighborhood, be it a fantasy village, a modern town or a futuristic off-planet settlement. Backers had already seen our cobblestone/dirt road version, now we present two variations of the many available: a scifi straight road tile, and a 28mm modern crossroads tile.

Urban Straight road tile: 7cm, light blue "plastisteel" surface, Caution line sides, light grey "plastisteel" tile texture, FULLY magnetic

X Crossroads Urban tile, 14cm road, Asphalt, 28mm scale pedestrian stripes, Magnetic sidewalks, Sandstone tile texture

Variant River Flows: Along with the more exotic, scifi themes for our boards, unlocked two new "river" flows, lava and green toxic... stuff! These fillings can also be applied to fill craters, ponds or even "seas"/"lakes". Check them on Grey waste and Red planet tiles. The Red planet tile has a more alien look with special minerals. Again, the square shapes are actual magnetic hardpoints.

Green toxic river, painted version

Sci-Fi Crystal Formations: even better than minerals, backers can now order MAGNETIC crystals which give a very scifi look on their boards. If they look realistic, it's because they are fully based on real Jade formations. They are cast in transparent coloured resin, at various shapes.

I have even more stuff to show you, especially the new Elevation change System we developed; but it will have to wait till my next blog post. If you liked the new stuff and the images, please share the word with people interested and -of course- get yourselves some in the eshop!

Good gaming all,

Last Four Days to get your PEDION Modular Terrain!

It seems that after hitting the infamous "mid-campaign" sluggishness, the Pedion Kickstarter campaign managed to reach the £25000 pledge sum, unlocking the Pond/OxbowLake/Marsh Tiles.
Now, it is the last four (4) days of the campaign - for Pedion's to become even better and for you to get an even greater variety of battlefields. So, if you were planing on pledging, now is the time!
While Pedion will be available through our e-shop after the Kickstarter is fulfilled (this is the project's aim after all), backers will

  1. pay less that the retail prices, both for tile sets and for the subscription service
  2. get free stuff like trees, walls etc
  3. receive their sets much sooner
  4. help Pedion become even better.

Even if you think about getting lots of terrain afterwards, a pledge now can mean wonders for Pedion's future. And speaking of future, let's take a look at those Stretch Goals!

Pond and Widening River Tile, with Marsh Upgrade

The £25000 Stretch Goal unlocked a series of tiles and upgrades, which actually are based on the same base design, and their production will use the same mold. The two tile types are the Pond (small lake) Tile and the Widening River Tile; both tiles can be converted to include marshland!

The River Widening is a special river tile (a river Turn, joining to the rest of your river tiles) which meanders and the water is in the process of creating an oxbow lake.

Widening turn river tile (forming an Oxbow lake), painted version
The Pond tile is actually a stand-alone small lake, using exactly the same design without the river connections (thus saving some £ on mold design)

Pond Tile, painted version
What really makes the difference though, is that you can at anytime convert those two tiles into marshland! With the corresponding add-on, you can clip on and off swamp surface, creating either a partial marshland on a river side, or a full marsh on top of your lake:

Widening turn with prototype* Marshland add-on clipped on, turning the tile into a riverside marshland**

Pont tile with a Marshland prototype* add-on, turned into a full Swamp

Close view on the riverside marshland
*Expect the final Marshland add-ons to be made from much thinner resin, in order to fit more seamlessly on the river/lake sides, to reduce slopes and to keep the whole marsh on a lower elevation.
**The marshland motif has been drawn from Luisiana marshland images. The riverside marshland is formed at the wider side of the river. This is not common, since water flows faster outside, but it made for a bigger marsh; so let's assume that the outer curve would be the place with lots of alluvial which would help to create a marsh if the water would again erode the closer turn...

Next Stretch Goal: SciFi Themes and Crater Tile types

Although we are nearing the end, there is a number of Stretch Goals that we may unlock yet!
The closest one, on terms of pledge total, is the availability of two new ground variations when we reach £28000, both more suitable to a Science Fiction setting: the "Red Planet" and the "Grey Wastes". These new variations will also unlock a new type of Tile: the Crater tile.
Actually, there are going to be two different kinds of crater tiles. The first is going to show a big, regular crater, usually the result of planetary Impact. The other will depict overlapping smaller craters, with ground devastated from artillery. Take a first glimpse of both the new themes and the crater tiles on the photos below:

Next Social Stretch Goal: FREE Walls for everyone if we reach 165 Backers

Since the number of 180 backers may seem a bit far-fetched, I do not want to end without another freebie :) So, let us reach 165 Backers first, and everyone with a physical reward will also receive some free walls! Specifically:
  • For every backer who gets 1 to 6 tiles (through Sets and add-ons), he or she will receive 1 Hedge Fences Set (that's 2x 12cm or 4x 5.2cm Hedge walls, see add-ons)
  • For every backer who gets 7 to 16 tiles (through Sets and add-ons), he or she will receive 1 Stone Walls Set (that's 2x 12cm or 4x 5.2cm Stone walls, see add-ons)
  • For every backer who gets 17 or more tiles (through Sets and add-ons), he or she will receive 1 Magnetic Columns Set (that's 2x single connectors and 1 T-connector columns, see add-ons)
  • All Wall System Starter Sets get ONE MORE Stone Wall piece

Future stuff...

We may never reach it, at least on this Kickstarter, but I wanted to give you a glimpse of what I had in stock for the SciFi/Urban Stretch Goal: a road tile upgrade with luminated roadsides... Check the early prototype - LED lighting on 12V Battery

So what are you waiting for? The time is now - pledge, spread the word, bring your friends in and get the last terrain you will ever need!

Good gaming,

George

Enhance your Battlefield! PEDION Wall System unlocked

Our backers did it again - yes, another Stretch Goal is down, one that really enhances our range: the Pedion Wall System.
The newly unlocked Pedion Bridge - modular, affordable, perfect for your River Tiles!

Raise those Walls Soldier!

The Wall System started as a small side-project, designed to take advantage of the connectivity of the Tiles and add man-made features on them, which can be removed easily and stored away – Pedion style. The Stretch Goal unlocks the basics of the Wall-system, allowing players to get a series of stone fences and hedges to enhance their terrain and their games. The main requirements behind the Wall System are:
a) to avoid the placing of walls on bases for stability,
b) to allow flexibility in wall placement and unit movement,
c) to take advantage of magnetized areas on the tiles, and
d) to be simple and affordable.

Creating wargame walls without bases improves the aesthetics of the battlefield (the walls touch the ground realistically ) and allows unit placement next to them without having to balance the unit on the raised base. But what substitutes bases or unnatural wall thickness? The Pedion Columns of course.

The main principle of the System is this: there are “stone” columns (1x1x3cm) which act as the anchors of the walls/fences. These posts have magnetic bases to clip on the tiles, and magnets on 2 or 3 of their sides for the wall parts to clip onto them. So, you first place the columns, and then easily snap any wall part you want on and off. The Columns act as stabilizers and connectors for a network of fences.

You can better understand see the simple way the System works (and the easy that walls are dismantled and stores away in the following video, especially after 0:34)

The prototypes you see on the photos and video are made from foamboard and plasticard. The Stretch Goal represents the design of molds to create resin parts of walls and columns, to be painted afterwards. For the hedges I have used pan scourer – and I am not sure if I’ll switch to something else, if it is going to keep the cost low for backers.

Speaking of cost, there are new options in the Add-ons section, for backers to enhance their sets. Expect for these to grow, as I will add more wall lengths and options. And perhaps grab that “Crops Tile” Hedge Set, as the price is a Kickstarter special!

The wall parts will be 12cm (4.7”) long, 3mm thick and their height will vary depending on scale and purpose. Specifically, I was planning to make available different heights for players to choose: “15mm low” (H=10mm), “15mm high/20-28mm low” (H=20mm), “20-28mm high” (H=30mm). For Stone fences, there will be grey stone, sand stone and brick variations.

Build those Bridges

Along with the "Wall System", another favorite of mine unlocked: the Pedion Bridge. In the spirit of Pedion, the Bridge is a 3-part flat stone modular construct, designed for the depth and with of the River Tiles. The arches go 1 cm deep to touch water surface and the bridge is 7 cm wide and 14 cm long.
It assembles (magnetically) into one piece or you can dismantle it and store it away without taking any space. If you are getting any River tiles, this is a must have add-on, especially at the £9 price tag.

Desert and Winter Variation photos

Many backers asked for them, so take a look at the first photos from Desert/Winter prototype tiles. The beautiful 15mm and 6mm miniatures of Anne and +David Yeomans  bring the photographs to life.
Desert theme with Asphalt Road - 15mm FoW minis

6mm Ancients on Desert tiles

The elephant is coming!

Special kind of "broken ground" tile type I am thinking for Desert and Snow: raised dunes/drifts. It increases tile weight and vertical size, but looks nice.

Next Stretch Goal

We still have a little bit over 2 weeks left in the Kickstarter campaign - how about some more Stretch Goals? The next one, upon £28000, will unlock some "Science Fiction" looks for the Tiles. But this is not only it; this SG unlocks the two types of Crater Tiles (asteroid and bombardment crater) as well as different, more exotic "liquids" for your River tiles: Lava flow and Green toxic stream...
Hooked? Spread the word, bring your friends and we will reach it!

Good gaming,

George

Journal #8 - or, On Rivers and Streams

Took me long enough to get to this post, and I hope everyone is doing ok. Excuse my tardiness, but I was trying to get things moving to finally Kickstart Pedion. But enough small talk - let's take a look at one of my best accomplishments so far, the "River" tiles for Pedion.

Many a wargamer won't consider a battlefield worth its name if it doesn't include a river. For me, I think that rivers play less part than hills (previous Journal), but, my, do Rivers make a Battlefield stand out! So, Pedion will include a series of River Tiles, and beautiful ones if I may say so :)

Ambushing a Water Elemental - miniatures included just for scale, from Reaper, Wizkids, painted by yours truly and +Tasos Leontarakis

Following the Pedion system logic, part of the tile can be designated aw River or Stream. It depends on the players, the scenario and/or the rules to define what this means, if it is impassable, if it includes difficult ground crossings/fords, or if bridges are required.

As with Road Tiles, River Tiles must be designed to connect to each other, forming a meander and crossing the table/battlefield from one side to another (not necessarily opposite ones). Due to the square shape of the tiles, the river part of each tile should start and end in specific places, in order for the tiles to be interchangeable. Again I followed the "roads" design philosophy, and the rivers start and end at the middle of tile sides. That means mostly 90 degrees turns of the water flow, but it seems realistic enough.

I once more put my expertise into cartography and GIS into good use and digitized real-life data: the river flow and turns are not made-up, but copy parts of the flow of the Columbia River in the USA.

One of most basic requirements for Pedion (see my first ever post) was for the terrain to seem realistic as real topography. in particular, I always had an issue (and I think many do), both aesthetic and practical, with river pieces placed over a terrain board - the river was protruding from the terrain, and the miniatures will have to... climb it ?!

Pedion River Tiles have an actual depression across all the river parts, so the ground actually sinks when it reaches the river (as it should). The riversides are designed to either be steep or gentle sloping (1 to 3 ratio) to allow miniature placement. The depression is about 1cm deep (~0.4"). As a matter of fact, the main reason the rest of the Pedion Tiles are 1 cm deep is to accommodate for such a depression in the case of rivers.

River Tile Properties and Variations
  • Realistic-looking, 1 cm depressed river tiles, with 1:3 slopes on river side for secure miniature positioning.
  • For the time being there are six (6) discreet River tile designs: Three "straight" designs (river crossed from opposite sides) with different kind of curving (one includes an islet), and two right "turns".
  • The River width is approx. 7 cm on the tiles (that's about 2.75") although it varies across the tile. I selected this size as it corresponds to realistic river sizes for the whole 15mm to 28mm scale range Pedion is intended for. Therefore, the river can correspond to a 4m (13') stream in 28mm scale (1/56), up to a 7m wide river (23') in 15mm scale (1/100).
  • The Riversides include metal hardpoints. These can be used for magnetic terrain pieces from Pedion tiles, like trees, walls etc.to snap onto.
  • Although any tile could be designated as such, there will be a specific design for a Ford Tile, where both River and Road Pedion Tiles could snap. Also a lightweight, modular Bridge design is already underway.
  • River tiles are amongst the most demanding tiles to produce, both regarding the time and the material needed. To keep the overall cost under control, the players could acquire two different versions of the River tiles: the Painted version or the Liquid Glass version (more realistic but also considerably more expensive). The only difference between those versions is the addition of two-part resin on the river surface to emulate the water flow - check our the photos below to see what I mean.
The "Painted" Version (before applying Resin)

The "Liquid Glass" Version (Resin on top)
A "Liquid" right bend, emulating a hairpin turn
The six basic River Tile designs, "Liquid Glass" Version (notice the glare)

In case your are wondering, creating those River Tiles is neither easy nor fast. For instance, you have to wait three full days for the poured on resin to become solid - so it needs patience. As with previous posts, I'll give you a glimpse of the creation steps the tiles underwent in the photos below.

This is a picture of the finished, Liquid Glass River Tiles in a 4'x4' battlefield configuration. Would you game on that? :)

A Pedion River Valley

In Conclusion

With this Journal/Blog Post, I conclude the first series of extensively describing the various kinds of Pedion Tiles, their properties and set variants. God willing, the blog posts will continue, expanding the world of Pedion and my design advancements. Also, I will let you know of how the effort of crowdfunding Pedion is moving along, and when to get on board! Also I show off some minor Pedion System expansions and Add-ons: Walls, Bridges, Buildings, and new Tile kinds.

So please stay tuned (do try our twitter and facebook pages, will you?) and I'm anxious on your comments on River tiles and the Pedion Battlefields in general.

Good gaming all!
